Creative Writing with Adam Wyeth

Setting the captive free!

With enough passion and desire I believe we can do anything. But to write we also need technique and craft; these things only come with practise, and a good bit of discipline. Throughout these six or ten weeks you will be given a multitude of exercises and tips that you will need to set your inner scribbler free. Each exercise will then be read by me and you will receive personal feedback. I'm not looking for masterpieces, just pieces that contain something of your own creativity. The exercises should be seen as games and treated with an element of fun.

The course will be key in discovering your own unique voice as a writer and for furthering and strengthening that voice. We will also be looking at pieces of literature from the inside and discover what makes these pieces work, then do imitation exercises. Hemingway said, 'You can't teach writing you can only learn it.' And the only way to learn is to write. So you'll be encouraged to write as much as possible, keep a note book with you, and to create a daily writing routine, (preferably the morning when the mind is most active and fresh). You will also be encouraged to widen your reading habits. All great writers are also great readers! I will suggest various books and anthologies for you to read.

Some of the games the course will include:

  • Speed writing or stream-of-consciousness writing
  • Finding your voice
  • Keeping it symbol
  • Plotting and shaping a short story or novel
  • Characterization, conflict and angle
  • Avoiding cliché and then subverting cliché
  • Tackling poetry forms
  • Our courses are carried out through one to one email correspondence and all you need is internet access.
  • Looking at metaphor and simile
  • Rewriting, editing, polishing
  • Using literature as models and springboards for writing
